Oztrail Mitchell Swag Review
Setup:
The Oztrail Mitchell Expedition Double Swag has a three pole design that does not rely on a spreader bar like the Adventure Kings swag. This can make getting the rods through the canvas sleeve a bit tricky but should be easy enough after a few practice runs. This is not a fully freestanding swag and therefore you will need to tie it down with the provided heavy-duty ropes and pegs.
There were issues with some of the earlier models of these tents with the poles breaking, but this has since been resolved with some high-quality High-tensile Durallium 7001 alloy poles. The single version of this swag also rolls up very tight and be easily stored away in the back of a car / 4wd, however, the double swag really requires two people to pack it up tightly.
Weatherproofing:
The OZtrail swag has a 330 GSM canvas and a PVC bottom which is standard across newer swags. The 330 GSM canvas puts this swag at the lower end of thickness and therefore may not be as suitable in very wet conditions as other swags on the market.
It does have fantastic ventilation as the entire canvas can be folded back to expose No-See-Um Mesh for the entire length of the swag. This is perfect for those hot nights to let air in and allowing you to sleep under the stars as well as keeping out the smallest of insects.
The large windows at each end also allow great air flow during hot nights and keep condensation from building up.
A combination of the above features makes this swag perfect for the more tropical climates up North in Australia or those who camp frequently during summer.
Size:
The Oztrail Mitchell Expedition swags come in both single and double sizes. Both are 2100m long (comparable with the adventure kings and ARB skydome swags) and the double is 1450mm wide and 850mm high while the single is 900mm wide and 700mm high.
When packed the double swag is 1450 mm long, 400mm wide and 400 high and weights 13kg making it one of the lighter double swags on the market.
Features:
With internal storage pockets and a 70mm internal mattress, the Oztrail Mitchell swag has similar features to most swags on the market. There is also an optional centre ridge bar to allow for pitching without guy ropes to make the swag free standing if required.
Oztrail is known for their good post-purchase customer service and offer a 2-year warranty on all their swags.
Conclusion:
The Oztrail Mitchell Expedition swags have a lower canvas GSM rating than their competitors making them not as suitable for wet weather conditions. However they are well priced, very functional, and have great breathability, making them a great option for the warmer states of Australia.
